History

Our Beginnings

Buffalo became a village in 1816, and in New York City the American Bible Society was founded. By 1847, Buffalo got its own Bible Society whose purpose it was "to promote the circulation of Holy Scriptures without note or comment and in English, those of the commonly received version," and to distribute the Scriptures in English and other needed languages. By 1888, our Society was supplying Bibles in 16 different languages locally to hospitals, jails and schools, as well as to trains passing to Chicago and boats in our harbor and on the Erie Canal. Bibles were stocked in 18 different languages, including Seneca, and were given away or sold for twenty cents a copy, which was a ridiculously low price even for that time. Now there are more than 42 different languages being distributed.
